S&P 500 FAQ

How many companies are in the S&P 500?

This list has 500 companies and 503 tickers. The extra tickers are second share classes of the same company.

How is the S&P 500 list updated?

We follow the announcements of S&P Dow Jones Indices. When a company joins, leaves or changes its ticker, the list changes and the change is shown under Recent changes with its date. The prices and figures in the table are refreshed every day after our data update.

Why are there more than 500 tickers?

A few companies have two listed share classes, for example Alphabet (GOOGL and GOOG), Fox (FOXA and FOX) and News Corp (NWSA and NWS). Each class has its own ticker and price, so both appear in the table. In the sector breakdown and in the combined financials each company is counted once.

How is market cap estimated?

Market cap (estimated) is the latest closing price times the number of shares implied by the latest fiscal year: net income divided by diluted earnings per share. It is an estimate and can differ from figures published elsewhere, because share counts change during the year. A company whose figures are missing shows a dash.

What is in the S&P 500 download?

The Excel file has four sheets: the list (ticker, company, sector, industry, price, estimated market cap, revenue, net income, fiscal year, P/E, one-year change and price date), the annual financials of every company, from FY2007 where available (revenue, gross profit, operating income, net income, EPS, total debt and free cash flow), the combined figures by year and the sector totals. The CSV file has the list. Downloads are part of Pro. A free sample with 20 companies and 5 years is available without signing up.

Is this the official index?

No. StockYears lists the companies and shows their reported financials. We do not show official index weights or the index level. The sector shares and the combined figures are sums over the companies in this list.

Is this the official S&P 500 index?

No. The historical chart and the returns by year since 2017 are based on the price of the SPY ETF, which follows the S&P 500. They are not the official index level, which belongs to S&P Dow Jones Indices, and the prices exclude dividends, so the figures differ from the index and from total return figures.
